Chapter the Ninth

Cresswell: December 1820

Before you begin a letter, especially when it is on any occasion of importance, weigh well in your own mind the design and purpose of it; and consider, very attentively, what sentiments are most proper for you to express, and your correspondent read.’ (Elizabeth Frank, Classical English Letter-writer, 1816).

It was several days after the visit of Bishop Collins before Catherine felt sufficient confidence in her father’s condition to be able to turn her mind to the composition of an answer to the proposal she had received from him. She would mention nothing of her father’s indisposition following his visit – she refused to give Mr. Collins that satisfaction.

Unlike most letters that Catherine wrote, this went through several drafts, and before she had a text with which she was satisfied, the floor of her bedchamber was strewn with crumpled sheets of discarded paper.

This is what she finally wrote:

Longbourn

Monday13th November

Most Reverend William Collins,

You will, I am sure, forgive the time I have taken to respond to your most generous offer seeing it as evidence that I have given the matter the careful consideration it deserved.
